U.S. Officials Told Bernie Sanders Russia Is Trying To Help His Campaign

Bernie Sanders Holds New Hampshire Campaign Events

According to a report from the Washington Post, intelligence officials told Bernie Sanders that the Russian government is trying to help his campaign as part of their efforts to interfere with the Democratic primary election.

Sanders issued a statement denouncing the Russian attempts to aid his campaign.

"[Russian President Vladimir Putin] is an autocratic thug who is attempting to destroy democracy and crush dissent in Russia. Let's be clear, the Russians want to undermine American democracy by dividing us up and, unlike the current president, I stand firmly against their efforts, and any other foreign power that wants to interfere in our election," he said.

He suggested that some of the "ugly stuff" attributed to his supporters may have been Russian trolls.

"In 2016, Russia used Internet propaganda to sow division in our country, and my understanding is that they are doing it again in 2020. Some of the ugly stuff on the Internet attributed to our campaign may well not be coming from real supporters."

Sanders is currently leading the Democratic field after getting off to a strong start in Iowa and New Hampshire. Sanders is looking to keep his momentum going as the candidates head to the Nevada caucuses on Saturday (February 22).
